Goran Sterner

U.S. NATIONAL TEAM COACH & HEAD U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM COACH.
Goran Sterner joined the USBA as National Coach in July 1994. He came to the USBA from Gothenburg, Sweden, where he worked as assistant to Swedish National Coach Jan-Olov Jacobsson. He also served as National Coach for Sweden's 18 to 23-year-old squad. The Swedish badminton program, one of the best in the world, boasts world-top-10 women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles players.

As National Team and Olympic Coach, Sterner is instrumental in preparing U.S. elite athletes for the 1996 Games. He also oversees the USBA Resident Athlete Program at the Olympic Training Center and is developing a comprehensive program to produce future world-top-10 players.

As a player, Sterner competed for the 1974-75 Swedish Under-18 national team. He won the European Under-18 men's doubles title with Bruno Wachfeldt.

Sterner earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Physical Education in Stockholm in 1990. There he studied under the acclaimed Drs. Per-Olof Astrand and Bjorn Ekblom. Besides coaching for the Swedish National Team, Sterner taught physical education and coached at one of Sweden's top badminton clubs before joining the USBA.
