Background

Maccabi USA is an organization that continues to develop projests to increase Jewish identity, encourage Jewish pride, strengthen bonds among Jews and create a heightened awreness of Israel. For more information their web site is www.maccabiusa.com . The 15th Maccabiah Games, which were held in July 1997, featured

• A 600-member American delegation, representing 37 states.
• More than 5,000 athletes from 53 countries.
• Competition in 36 sports, 26 of which featured American athletes. New sports included beach volleyball, ice hockey and taekwondo, and U.S. athletes earned medals in all three.
• U.S. participation in four categories open, juniors, masters and physically challenged.
• The American delegation participating in a pre-camp cultural program that included educational seminars and touring throughout State of Israel.
• The expansion of Lev l'Lev, our highly successful tzedakah program through which U.S. athletes interact with Israeli children at various institutions.
• Numerous members of the U.S. Maccabiah Team participating in a B'nai Mitzvah.
• The American delegation earning 316 medals 103 gold, 107 silver and 106 bronze.

Since their inception in 1932 the Maccabiah Games have grown in many ways, but the vibrant feelings and the excitement experienced by the participants remain the same. From 1953, the Games have been held every four years in Israel in the year following the Olympics. In 2001, more than 5,600 world-class athletes from more than 50 countries are expected to participate in the 16th Maccabiah, which promises to be the most exciting ever held as we enter the new millenium.

Competitors Needed - November 2000

I am the Badminton Chair for the World Maccabiah Games to be held in Israel this summer. We are looking for 3 men and 2 women to be part of the US team. The US team will compete in about 25 sports and have about 500 athletes. Liz Arohnson (former US Nationals Team Member) is the coach of the badminton team. The badminton team plays both in a team event and in individual competions. The team is 3 men's singles, one women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. No player can play in more than two team matches. It is a round robin, to determine the top four countries, and then those contries play a single elimination tournament. In the individual competition, every competitor can play in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. If you would please publish something to help us find the best possible team, I would appreciate it.
