Kuala Lumpur, May 19: Marleve Mainaky's win in the third singles against Kenneth Jonassen sent defending champion Indonesia to their 12th Thomas Cup final in a fiery fashion.

They the ended Denmark's Thomas Cup dreams with a hard fought 3-2 victory at Putra Stadium here today. The Indonesians have thus qualified for their fifth consecutive final.

The Indonesians lost to Malaysia in 1992 before bagging a hattrick in Jakarta in 1994, Hongkong in 1996 and 1998.

Today's 3-2 win was their best best performance thus far in this tournament.

It was not an easy victory for the Indonesians who had to fight the Danes all the way.

In the first singles - a clash between world No. 1 Peter Gade-Christensen and No. 2 H. Hendrawan-  ended in the same order of the rankings, as the Dane outlasted the Indon 12-15, 17-16, 1-11 in a 90-minute battle.

It could easily go down as the match of the tournament as both players gave ground, caught up, took the lead and vice versa.

In the first game Hendrawn looked the aggressor, unleashing powerful smashes to douse the pace of Gade-Christensen to win 15-12.

Hendrawan could have wrapped it up in the second, again in a point for point race. He led 16-14 in the setting to three but Gade-Christensen, nicknamed `flyer', won crucial net exchanges to end up the winner at 17-16.

Gade-Christensen's superb fitness saw the Dane race home in the third set to win 15-11 and give Denmark the lead.

Then in the first doubles, Indonesia unveiled a new combination - pairing Rexy Mainaky with Tony Gunawan against Lars Paaske-Martin Lungaard.

The Rexy-Tony did not show any flaws in the pairing when they finished off the Danes in 30 minutes, winning 15-7, 15-3 to put Indonesia on level terms.

Teenager Taufik Hidayat gave Indonesia a 2-1 lead when he defeated reigning Olympics champion Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen 15-11, 15-9.

Taufik, 19, was not looking too good against his opponent who is almost double his age but Hoyer-Larsen made too many mistakes at the net and smashing the bird out of play.

Taufik won 15-11 and gained momentum towards the end of the second game to finish 15-9.

Former world champions Sigit Budiarto-Candra Wijaya joined forces for the first time today after Sigit's suspension due to a failed dope test.

However, after showing their deadly form to win the first game 15-8 against Jens Eriksen-Jesper Olsen, the allowed the Danes to fight back gallantly to edge the Indons 17-15, 17-16 in the second and the rubber games respectively to level the score at 2-2.

With the result of the tie depending on the third singles, the Indons looked panicky while the Danes were already celebrating.

Their celebrations did not last long as Marleve Mainaky playing in the third singles against Kenneth Jonassen secured the winning point for Indonesia with a 15-14, 15-13 win.
