Kuala Lumpur, May 19, Thurs: Sole European challengers Denmark face a mighty battle when they take on reigning champions Indonesia in the second Thomas Cup semifinals this evening.
Denmark, craving to become the first European team to win the Thomas Cup, are hoping for a change in tide.
"Like I said before we are the underdogs and the Indons are the favourites. Anything can happen. I just want my boys to go out the and enjoy themselves playing against the tougher opposition," said team coach Kanneth Larsen.
Denmark's last Thomas Cup meeting with Indonesia ended with a 0-5 defeat in Hongkong.
"We won't get that duck again. This time I reckon that the scores will be close and the matches will be tight," Larsen said.
The Scandinavian outfit will be relying on the strength of their talented singles lineup, led by world No. 1 Peter-Gade Christensen and Atlanta Olympics gold medallist Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen.
But on the other hand, Denmark is up against one of the most balanced Indonesian side ever assembled this time.
With players like world No. 2 H. Hendrawan, two time All-England finalist Taufik Hidayat and World Grand Prix finalist Marleve Mainaky, their lineup is no less impressive.
The three Indonesian singles players have proven their mettle so far in all three of the group matches and the team will also have the support from hundreds of their supporters who are expected to flood the Putra Stadium.
Indonesia's two formidable doubles pairs in world no. 1 Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan and veterans Ricky Subagja-Rexy Mainaky should not have any problems in giving their team two points.
