Kuala Lumpur, May 16: Indonesia gained an early psychological boost when they beat China 4-1 to take the top spot in the Yellow Group on the last day of the Thomas Cup preliminary round competition tonight.

However, the win was not that significant considering that both teams had booked their places in the semifinal earlier.

The Chinese team decided not to use their full strength when they rested top singles player Xia Xuanze against Indonesia.

China thus enters the semifinal as the group runnersup and will clash with South Korea, the Blue Group winners, in the semifinal.

Indonesia will meet Denmark for a place in the final. Chinese coach Li Yongbo said that it was part of the team's strategy to leave out Xia Xuanze in the first place.

"We had already made the semifinals and it does not matter who we meet. We wanted a chance to test out the players and if they win, so much the better. This could also be our lineup in the semifinals."

Indonesia easily wrapped up the challenge from the first three matches against China tonight.

The first signs of an early victory for Indonesia showed when Hendrawan raced to a 7-0 lead against Japan Open winner Ji Xinpeng before slowing down.

However, Hendrawan had enough reserves to pull through 15-7, 15-12.

Indonesia's top doubles pair and world number one Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan also made victory look effortless and won 15-10, 15-11 against Yu Jinhao-Chen Qiqiu.

All-England finalist Taufik Hidayat needed to go to rubber game to give Indonesia the winning point against Luo Yigang.

However, Hidayat's superb reflexes and anticipation eventually gave him the edge and he won with a score of 15-10, 6-15, 15-10.

Zhang Wei-Zhang Jun pulled one back for China when they beat Ricky Subagja-Rexy Mainaky 15-8, 15-6.

However, Indonesia retained their perfect record in the singles when Marleve Mainaky tamed Chen Hong 15-2, 15-3.
