Kuala Lumpur, May 15: Malaysia put up a gutsy display against Indonesia but spirit alone would not win battles on the court as the host team's players found out after receiving a 5-0 thrashing.
Ng Mee Fen gave a spirited display against Indonesia's Lidya Djaelawijaya but eventually bowed out 11-6, 11-9.
Lim Pek Siah-Joanne Quay looked as if they were going to get a beating after losing the first game 2-15 Eliza NathanialªDeyana Lomban.
However, the Malaysian pair cordinated well in the second to to apply the pressure on their opponents but their finishing cost them the match and they lost 11-5.
Then Wong Miew Kheng lost the first set to Ellen Angelina tamely but stretched the Indonesian to the setting before going dowm 10-13.
Sandy Chor-Ang Li Peng also followed up with a good performance but still ended up losing 3-15, 9-15 to Etty Tantri-Cynthia Tuwankota.
In the final match, Malaysia fielded Wong Pei Tty instead of national No. 1 Woon Sze Mei, Pei Tty who was fielded for exposure won the first game 11-6, then lost the next two 5-11, 1-11.
Indonesian coach Immelda Wigoeno was not really happy with her team's performace.
"They need more improvement and must be consistent in their play," she said, commenting that the Malaysian shuttlers have improved quite a bit.
Malaysian team manager Lim Teong Kiat said he was very happy with the way his girls played.
"They had nothing to lose. They were not expected to win any. But our girls have shown that they are capable of winning too," he said.
