Kuala Lumpur, May 15: The Koreans are feeling on top of the world after defeating hosts Malaysia and European challengers Denmark.
Proud coach Kim Moon-soo, who formed one-half of the deadly pair with current Malaysian coach Park Joo-bong said they are now capable of lifting the Thomas Cup.
"Preferably we would love to take on China in the semifinal," he said.
Kim-soo may have picked the right team, because against China, Korea can safely step in the court with the perceived advantage of two sure point from the doubles.
It has always been Korea's strategy, two sure points from the doubles and steal one of the three singles matches.
"This is what we have to do against China if we are to meet in the semifinal. I believe that our No. 2 singles player Lee Hyun-il will give us the decisive point. He should be able to defeat Ji Xinpeng," Moon-soo said.
But based on Korea's shock wins over Malaysia and Denmark, Moon-soo said they now have an option of winning points from the singles.
"Now we don't just have to rely on doubles but also have hope in the singles," he said.
Moon-soo however, stressed that whether it is Indonesia or China who meet Korea in the final, it will not bother the team.
"All I can say is that we are ready for any team," he said.
The Korean singles players have been a revelation in the Thomas Cup.
Lee Hyun-il is the most impressive. In the first match against Malaysia he upset Ong Ewe Hock. Yesterday, he pulled off another stunt by downing Olympic champion Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen.
On both occasions Hyun-il's point turned the tide in Korea's favour.
