China's women crush Koreans to maintain invincible Uber Cup aura

Kuala Lumpur, May 15 (AFP) - Defending champions China completed their Uber Cup first round matches with another impressive win here Monday, laying waste to a flimsy South Korean challenge in the badminton team tournament.

China, regarded as virtually unbeatable by most other teams here, made sure they finished on top of the Purple Group by disposing of the Koreans in double-quick time.

Gong Ruina sealed the win with a third rubber 11-3, 11-2 singles victory over Kim So-Yeon at the Putra Stadium.

China had raced into a 2-0 lead with dazzling performances from world number two Gong Zhichao and world number three Dai Yun.

Gong hardly broke sweat on her way to outclassing Si Jin-Sun 11-3, 11-4 in just 17 minutes.

Dai took one minute longer to get the better of Jung Yeon-Kyung in the second rubber but dropped a point fewer on the way to an easy 11-3, 11-2 win.

The two other ties in the best-of-five match were to be played later Monday.

The win means China finish on top of the Purple Group, handing them a semi-final against the runner up from the Pink Group, most likely to be Indonesia.
