Kuala Lumpur, May 11: Defending champions Indonesia began their Thomas Cup campaign in style with a 5-0 whitewash of Sweden in a Group B match tonight.
Parading their stars, Indonesia were hardly troubled by the Swedes and only needed a total of 104 minutes to secure victory from the first two singles and first doubles slots.
The title holders fielded all their top players against Sweden with the intention to secure a clear victory.
Indonesia did not disappoint their 200 plus supporters who turned up at Stadium Putra to cheer their heroes as all their players won in straight games tonight.
World number two and Asian Games silver medallist Hendrawan only needed 32 minutes to defeat Sweden's top singles player Thomas Johansson in the first singles.
Hendrawan employed his leaping dropcourt smashes to great effect against the taller Johansson and wrapped up the first game 15-5.
Johansson tried to force Hendrawan into a rubber game with some baseline play but it proved futile as Hendrawan clawed back to win 17Š14 in the second game.
World number one doubles pair Candra WijayaŠTony Gunawan put Indonesia two up after defeating Swedish veterans Par-Gunnar Jonsson-Peter Axelsson 15-5, 15-1 in only 22 minutes.
Taufik Hidayat gave Indonesia the winning point when he won in straight games 15-3, 15-9 against Rasmus Wengberg in the second singles in his first Thomas Cup appearance.
"It made my job easier, knowing that Indonesia were already leading 2-0 when I came out to play. I know Wengberg's game as he liked to play long rallies but today, he hardly troubled me," Taufik said later.
With the Swedish challenge over, veteran pair Ricky Subagja-Rexy Mainaky and Marleve Mainaky completed the Indonesian rout in similar fashion.
Ricky-Rexy defeated Henrik Andersson-Frederick Bergstrom 15-4, 15-3 in the second doubles while Mainaky won his third singles match against Martin Hagberg 15-2, 15-4.
