New badminton-specific public facility in the works Badminton players in Southern California could soon have a new badminton-only facility to play in. The public club, to be located in Orange and built by businessman Don Chew, would have 12 regulation courts as well as an international restaurant. The Orange Planning Commission recently approved his plans for the facility, which is planned for completion by October 1 995. Chew plans to offer space to high school badminton teams at discounted fees. "I wont to bring the young kids in. They're the only ones who are going to be the future," said Chew, 53, who played badminton professionally in his homeland of Thailond before coming to the U.S. The SCBA estimates there are over 10,000 badminton players in Southern California, most of whom play in high school or community center gyms or in the private Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. ****************************** Article scanned from Winter 94, Badminton USA, a publication of the USBA
