MINOR UPSETS MARK DAY 2 OF U.S. OPEN by Mike Grossman (from a report filed by J. Chang) September 25, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Several minor upsets of lower seeded players marked the second day of play at the badminton U.S. in the city of Orange in southern California, with the top seeds remaining in contention for the championships. In the eighth-finals or round-of-16 of the men's singles, seventh- seeded Indra Wijaya of Indonesia was upended by twelfth-seed Hwang Sun Ho of Korea in a close match 15-6, 12-15 and 7-15. Eighth-seed Pang Chen of Malaysia was eliminated by the tenth-seeded Budi Santoso of Indonesia 6-15 and 5-15. American Kevin Han, seeded 14th in the tournament, put a scare into fifth-seeded Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia. Han surprised Ong, this year's Malaysian Open champion with gritty and determined play in the first game to win at 15-12. The Malaysian buckled down to take tke second and the deciding third 15-9 and 15-4 to move on to the quarterfinals. In the eighth-finals of the small women's singles draw, Kim Sun Suk of Korea defeated Ella Karachkova of Russia, the listed fifth-seed, in a closely contested match with the two exchanging "overtime" wins in the first two games. In the deciding third game, the Russian lady had no reserves left and Kim won going away. The scoreline in the Kim-Karachkova match was 11-12 12-10 and 11-2 in favor of Kim. Cindy Shi of China, now residing in the USA, upset the seventh-seeded Charmaine Reed of Canada 11-6 and 11-8. Kara Solmundsen of Canada eliminated Lorena Blanco of Peru, the listed eighth-seed, with ease 11-2 and 11-1. In opening round of the mixed doubles, the unseeded but very capable Indonesian pair of Sandiarto and Indarti Isoliana beat Nikolaij Zuev and Ella Karachkova of Russia, the listed eighth-seeds 15-6 and 15-1. In the mixed doubles eighth-finals, Chung So Young of Korea, a past world and Olympic medalist, teamed up with Kim Dong Mun to upset the fifth-seeds from Sweden, Jan-Eric Antonsson and Astrid Crabo, in a closely contested match 15-8 10-15 15-12.
