OLYMPICS: BADMINTON - DAY 8 MORNING RESULTS CHINESE GIRLS AND RICKY AND REXY ARE GOLDEN July 31, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - Ge Gei and Gu Jun became China's latest golden girls at the Atlanta Olympics when they captured the gold medal in the women's doubles event of badminton this morning. Ge and Gu, who are the top-ranked women's pair in the world, showed why they are world number ones by easily defeating the topseeded pair of Gil Young Ah and Jang Hye Ock of Korea 15-5 and 15-5 in the final match today. Indonesians Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky later joined Ge Fei and Gu Jun in the ranks of Olympic gold medalists when they scraped past Malaysians Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock in the men's doubles finals. The Indonesians' path to the gold medal was not as easy as the Chinese ladies. In the opening game, Subagja and Mainaky were overwhelmed by Cheah and Yap 15-5 as the Indonesian defense was not up to par. In the second, the Indonesians raced to a 5-0 lead as they got both attack and defense in gear. However, Cheah and Yap did not fold under the pressure and fought back with their own stellar defending and smashing. The Malaysians caught up to the Indonesians and even grabbed the lead at 12-11, as both sides put on stunning displays of smashing and defending. The Indonesians then managed to put even more speed and power in their attack to eke out a 15-13 win and pull even in the match. The third game featured more displays of spectacular jumpsmashing and smashblocking. The two pairs exchanged points and small leads, with the Malaysians managing to seize the upper hand at 12-10. Once again, Subagja and Mainaky caught up and passed the Malaysians with powerful attacking play and spectacular defense. At match point, Mainaky unloaded a powerful gold medal-winning smash that Cheah and Yap were unable to return.
