OLYMPIC GAMES: BADMINTON - SECOND DAY RESULTS GERMANS TAKE OUT TOP SWEDISH MEN'S DOUBLES TEAM July 25, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - Michael Helber and Michael Keck of Germany provided one of the highlights on the second day of badminton competition at the Atlanta Olympics when they defeated the 5/8 seeds from Sweden, Peter Axelsson and Par-Gunnar Jonsson in an opening round men's doubles match, 15-8, 15-13. In another men's doubles highlight matchup, Michael Sogaard and Henrik Svarrer of Denmark battled with Koreans Kim Dong Moon and Yoo Yung Sung. The two pairs split the first two games with the Danes squeezing out an 18-15 (5-2 in the tiebreak) in the deciding third game. In men's singles, the top seeds saw their first action in the competition and all came through with little difficulty, led by top-seed Joko Suprianto's easy 15-1 15-5 win over Pontus Jantti of Finland. In the top men's singles matchup of the day, Sun Jun of China beat Kim Hak Kyun of Korea 15-5 17-14. Kim Hak Kyun, who has been out of international competition for several months due to injury, could not cope with a matchplay-sharp Sun Jun, although the Korean did put up a valiant stand in the second and managed to force a 3-point setting or tiebreak at 14-all before going down to defeat. In women's doubles, the American pair of Linda French and Erica von Heiland were eliminated by Lisbet Stuer-Lauridsen and Marlene Thomsen of Denmark 15-4, 15-1. French and von Heiland were the last remaining American entry.
