THOMAS AND UBER CUPS PAY-PER-VIEW TV BEING STUDIED April 1, 1996 (D.SHUTTLENWS) - North American badminton fans may have the chance to view this year's edition of the world men's and women's team championships being held in Hong Kong from May 16-26 on pay-per-view television. The championships, known as the Thomas and Uber Cups, feature the most exciting matches in the sport of badminton because the players put forth their best efforts in representing their countries. LRA Racketsports, a sports management company based in Toronto, is exploring the feasibility of bringing the championships to Canadian and United States pay-per-view and is conducting a survey to gauge fan interest. Inspired by the World Cricket championships pay-per-view, LRA officials indicated that they will contact the International Badminton Federation to arrange to cablecast the key matches of the team championships if there is enough fan interest. The company has established a telephone survey line at 416-449-8742 where fans may indicate their interest in subscribing to the pay- per-view and their price preferences. LRA has also indicated that they will be monitoring the various Internet sites and mailing lists for any feedback. LRA officials hope that enough fans show interest so that they can bring about cablecasts of this year's Thomas and Uber Cups and other badminton events in the future.
