November 6, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Peter Gade of Denmark walloped another
Peter from Denmark, Peter Rasmussen, in the men's singles final of the Ipoh
Masters all-star invitational badminton tournament today 15-0 and 15-5 and
romped away with the 7,000 US dollar first place purse. In the men's doubles
title contest, Chandra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan of Indonesia defeated their
fellow Indonesians Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian 15-11 and 15-9 and took home
the 10,000 US dollar champion's prize.
The women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles events were not
contested at the Ipoh Masters tournament.
In the men's singles final, Gade took advantage of Rasmussen's penchant for
starting slowly and making many mistakes in the early going. He went on the
attack from the first rally on and did not allow Rasmussen a chance to get his
own attacking game going. With his tight net shots and baseline jumpsmashes
working to near-perfection, Gade blanked his countryman 15-0 in the first and
scored seven points in the second before Rasmussen was able to tally a marker.
Rasmussen managed to score several more points but Gade went back on the
attack and finished him off quickly 15-5.
In another development, Peter Gade revealed that he was bypassing the China
Open which takes place in Beijing in two weeks and that he would be training
in Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian national team instead in preparation for
the Grand Prix Finals that starts December 1 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
