Ipoh Masters: Two Peters Win; Hashim Injured

November 4, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Danish men's singles aces Peter Gade
and Peter Rasmussen both had successful opening days yesterday at the all-star
Ipoh Masters invitational badminton tournament in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. Gade,
the world number two player, defeated Hendrawan of Indonesia 15-11 and 15-11,
while 1997 world champion Rasmussen beat Wong Choon Hann of Malaysia 2-15,
15-12 and 15-6.
In yesterday's other men's singles matches, Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia turned
back compatriot Roslin Hashim 15-11 and 17-15, and Fung Permadi of Taiwan
overcame Indonesia's Indra Wijaya 12-15, 15-6 and 15-5.
In the second set of the Ong-Hashim match, Hashim was on the verge of sending
the contest into a decider but landed awkwardly after a jumpsmash and injured
an ankle. Ong was then able to play his way back into the game and to win the
set in a tiebreak 17-15.
In men's doubles action, Indonesia's Chandra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan beat
Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia 15-7 and 15-13, while Choong Tan
Fook and Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia defeated their fellow Malaysians Chan Chong
Ming and Jeremy Gan 9-15, 15-9 and 15-6.
Simon Archer and Nathan Robertson of England as well as Flandy Limpele and
Eng Hian of Indonesian had byes.
The Ipoh Masters is an invitational tournament featuring men's singles and
men's doubles events. 8 top men's singles players and 6 top men's doubles
pairs are competing. The 8 singles players have been divided into two groups
of four, and the 6 doubles pairs into two groups of three.
The first stage of the competition is a round-robin affair with the group
winners moving into the finals.
Gade is in men's singles Group A with Hendrawan, Ong and Hashim. Rasmussen is
in men's singles Group B with Permadi, Wong and Wijaya, who is a last-minute
replacement for the ill Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, the world number three.
Wijaya and Gunawan are in men's doubles Group A with the Cheah-Yap and the
Archer-Robertson combinations. Choong and Lee are in Group B with Limpele and
Hian and with Chan and Gan.
