September 2, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - A spate of errors and mistakes put an
early end to the run of badminton men's singles Olympic champion Poul-Erik
Hoyer at the Indonesian Open championships now underway in Denpasar, Bali.
Hoyer, the Dane who took Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996, was beaten by the
lightly regarded Yap Yong Jyen of Malaysia 13-15 and 12-15 in a round-of-16
match today.
The second-seeded Hoyer wasted his advantage over the Malaysian with mistakes
at the crucial moments in the match and allowed the steadier-playing Yap to
squeeze past him into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
1997 men's singles world champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark also was
eliminated today. He was defeated by Hendrawan of Indonesia 6-15 and 10-15.
Top seed Peter Gade, another Dane, won his match against Indonesian Ronny
Agustinus 15-14 and 15-1 to move ahead into the round-of-eight.
In women's singles, world champion Camilla Martin whitewashed young Indonesian
Siska Yunita 11-0 and 11-0. Second-seed Cindana Hartono Kusuma though failed
to live up to her billing. She was not able to cope with the strong smashing
and driving of Denmark's Mette Pedersen and was beaten 4-11 and 9-11.
