April 8, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Olympic men's doubles champions Ricky
Subagja and Rexy Mainaky were stunned by Koreans Kim Dong Moon and Ha Tae Kwon
in one of today's third round matches at the Japan Open badminton championship
at the Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo. The Olympic champions could not cope with the
lighning-fast shots of the Korean pair and went down to defeat, 5-15 and 6-15.
Men's doubles top seeds Cheah Soon Kit and Choong Tan Fook also were surprise
losers today. The Malaysian duo were beaten by China's Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu
12-15 and 10-15.
In men's singles, world number one Peter Gade of Denmark had another easy day.
He defeated Taiwan's Chien Yu-hsiu 15-1 and 15-3. However, Budi Santoso of
Indonesia, the third seed, was ousted by Malaysia's Wong Choon Hann. Hann used
a patient, defensive style to outplay and outpoint the attack-oriented Santoso
7-15 and 14-17.
