All-England: Sidek Rips Muscle; Stuer Gains Quarters

March 12, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - The veteran men's singles player Rashid Sidek of Malaysia made an unexpected and painful exit out of the one hundreth running of the prestigious All-England Open badminton championships now underway in Birmingham when he tore a calf muscle during a second round match with England's Peter Knowles yesterday. Sidek had taken the first game from the English player 15-12 but ran into problems with his 30-year old body late in the second and lost 13-15. He was not able to continue with the match in the third and deciding game.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Thomas Stuer of Denmark, a top men's singles player who knows full well the agony of injury, continued his comeback from an injury-filled 1998 with two upset victories today.

The Dane started off by disposing of eighth seed Chen Gang of China in the second round 15-4, 10-15 and 15-12, and then completed a very good day by beating the eleventh seeded Hendrawan of Indonesia 15-12 and 15-8.

Stuer next plays teammate Poul-Erik Hoyer, the 1996 Olympic champion, in the quarterfinal. Hoyer defeated China's Xia Xuanze in the second round 15-11 and 15-11. He then beat Roslin Hashim of Malaysia 15-9 and 15-5 later in the day.
