February 8, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Jeroen Van Dijk, the top-rated Dutch men's singles player, failed in his defense of the Dutch national title at his country's badminton championships held this past weekend at Den Bosch. Van Dijk was upended in yesterday's championship match by Joris Van Soerland 15-12 and 15-13.

In women's singles, Brenda Beenhakker repeated as Dutch champion. She knocked off top-seeded Judith Meulendijks 11-7, 4-11 and 11-3 in the final to become the Dutch women's singles titleholder for the fourth time.
