January 21, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Taiwan's Fung Permadi, winner of the
men's singles title at last week's Korean Open badminton championships,
continued on his winning ways yesterday at his adopted home country's own Open
tournament in Taipei. Permadi, unseeded at this tournament, defeated Denmark's
upset-conscious Kasper Fangel in the first round 15-11 and 15-2, and then
later in the day beat the sixth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden 15-13 and
15-8.
Permadi's Korean Open finals opponent, Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen of Denmark,
did not stay as hot as the Taiwanese player. Stuer fell victim to young Rony
Agustinus, the Indonesian player who is fast gaining a reputation as a danger
man and giant-killer. Agustinus yesterday added Stuer to the list of top
players that he has beaten, putting the tall Dane out in the first round 15-13
and 15-8.
At last week's Korean Open, Agustinus had accounted for Malaysian ace Rashid
Sidek.
Men's singles top-seed and world number one Peter Gade of Denmark pulled out
of the second top-tier tourney in a row this week. He had to withdraw from the
Korean Open last week because of severe influenza and still had not recovered
enough to compete at the Taipei Open.
In women's singles, top seed Camilla Martin of Denmark was upended by Ellen
Angelina(wati) of Indonesia 11-7, 8-11 and 10-13 in a first round encounter.
Martin had a chance to pull out the victory in the third set when she had a
match point at 10-9. However, she was not able to convert and went down to the
Indonesian in the tiebreaker.
