November 19, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - At the Surinam International badminton tournament played last weekend in Nesty Indoor Stadium in Pamaraibo, Canadian players led by the vastly experienced Denyse Julien easily took four championships and could have scored a complete sweep, had they fielded an entry in the men's singles event.

The Canadians, the badminton power in North America, were barely tested in the tournament, especially since none of the top players from rival USA or any competitors from the Asian and European badminton powerhouses were in Pamaraibo. Julien scored a hattrick of titles, taking the women's singles and mixed doubles events as well as the women's doubles with partner Charmaine Reid. Iain Sydie won two championships - the men's doubles with partner Brent Olynyk and the mixed event with Denyse Julien.

Surinam's Oscar Brandon took the men's singles title. Brandon defeated Roy Paul of Jamaica in the final 15-13, 12-15 and 15-8.

The Surinam International was a Class A-rated International Badminton Federation championship and was staged as part of the Surinam Badminton Association's 40th anniversary celebrations.
