With the victory, the Chinese finished the series, having won five of the six ties, and once again completed a very successful visit to England. In yesterday's meet at Stevenage, Deng Chuanhai and Lu Ying suffered a lopsided first game loss to England's Ian Sullivan and Gail Emms, but came back to win the opening mixed doubles match 1-15, 15-11 and 15-12. Dong Fang then whipped Tracey Hallam 11-5 and 11-1 in the women's singles, and Xiao Hui defeated Robert Nock 15-8 and 15-2 in men's singles to guarantee victory in the final tie for China. Gao Ling and Lu Ying beat Jo Goode and Gail Emms 15-10 and 15-6 in the women's doubles, and then the pair of Xia Xuanze and Cai Yun turned back Ian Sullivan and Anthony Clark 7-15, 15-9 and 15-6 to complete the rout. On Friday at Weston-super-Mare, China lost to the English side 2 matches to 3 in what a knowledgeable observer called a visitor's gift to their hosts. The Chinese used seldom fielded doubles combinations in suffering their defeat. Zhang Yi and Pi Hongyan lost to James Anderson and Jo Davies in the mixed doubles opener 4-15 and 12-15. Tang Chunyu and Dong Fang were beaten by Sarah Hardaker and Jo Davies in women's doubles 7-15 and 4-15. Fang Yong and Jian Shan were defeated by James Anderson and Neil Waterman in men's doubles 7-15, 15-10 and 10-15. China's Zhang Yang beat Andrew South in the second match - the men's singles - 13-15, 15-12 and 15-9. Hu Ting took the third match - the women's singles - defeating Tracey Hallam 11-2 and 11-8. The English victory at Weston-super-Mare meant that China would not sweep the six-tie series. On Monday this week at Gateshead, China won the first tie in the series 4 matches to 1. On Tuesday at Grantham, China was the victor, 3 matches to 2. On Wednesday in Portsmouth, China took an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the series, winning 3 matches to 2, and looked highly capable of a sweep. (pa/ds) COPYRIGHT 1998 © NEW SHUTTLENWS.
