INDONESIAN OPEN: LOCALS DOMINATE SEEDINGS AND DRAW
October 26, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Indonesian players occupy most of the
seeded positions at the four-star Indonesian Open badminton championhips
which runs from Wednesday to Sunday at the Senayan stadium in Jakarta. Thomas
Cup hero Hendrawan is the top pick in the men's singles event, while Mia
Audina has the first seed in women's singles.
World champions Chandra Wijaya and erstwhile partner Tony Gunawan are the
favourites in men's doubles. Eliza Nathanael and Denyana Lomban are picked to
win the women's doubles.
Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen of Denmark are the top seeds in the mixed
doubles event.
Due to the rioting that occurred throughout Indonesia in May as well as the
economic problems in Asia, many countries that usually participate in the
Indonesian Open have not sent any players to compete. Only Denmark, Malaysia,
Thailand, England, Brunei and Poland are represented and these nations have
sent small teams.
Denmark has the largest foreign team present with 12 athletes led by Olympic
gold medalist Poul-Erik Hoyer. Neighboring Malaysia has 10 players. Thailand
has 4 entries, England has 3, Brunei 2 and Poland 1.
Most of the overseas entries are male. There are only 2 foreign entries in
the women's singles and 2 non-Indonesian pairs in the women's doubles.
As a result of the small overseas represntation, majority of the entries in
the main draw are from Indonesia.
