SINGAPORE KONICA OPEN: GADE AND CAMILLA GO THRU TO THIRD ROUND
August 12, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Singles top-seeds Peter Gade and Camilla
Martin, both of Denmark, both got past their opening day matches at the
Singapore Konica Open today to book places in the third round. It was not
easy going though for Gade this morning. The world men's singles number one
had to battle to beat tough first round opponent Irwanshah from Indonesia.
The Dane who had taken time off from training after winning the Malaysian
Open early last month was slow and off-form in the first game and he lost
the opening stanza 5-15. Gade was able to scrape off his rustiness in the
second and third sets to beat Irwanshah 15-8 and 15-12.
Later in the day, Gade beat Malaysian Jason Wong 15-6 and 15-7.
Men's singles second seed Sun Jun of China, who is playing in his first
tournament after taking a long break following the Thomas Cup Finals, also was
extended on opening day. Sun had an easy first round 15-1 and 15-5 victory
over Jack Hee Liu-Kai of Singapore this morning, but had problems this evening
against the experienced Tam Kai Chuen of Hong Kong. Tam took a closely fought
first game from Sun 17-16, but the Chinese ace came back strong to take the
second and third sets 15-2 and 15-10.
Third seed Luo Yigang of China and fourth seed Ong Ewe Hock of Malaysia were
likewise tested in the first round. Luo was taken to three games by the
lightly-regarded Ruud Kuijten of Belgium 15-13, 10-15 and 15-2. Ong survived
a first game setback, matchpoint and a second game tiebreaker to beat Brunei
Open champion Taufik Hidayat 4-15, 17-16 and 15-8.
Camilla Martin, the top pick in the women's singles had a much easier day.
She drew a first-round bye and then breezed past Malaysia's Ng Mee Fen 11-1
and 11-0.
Women's singles second seed Gong Zhichao also had an easy opening day. Like
Martin, she had a first round bye. Later in the day, she beat Luxi Xiao of
Singapore 11-2 and 11-1.
In women's doubles, Indonesia's Rosiana Zelin and Indarti Isolina were upset
by Chen Li-Chin and Tsai Hui-Min of Taiwan 15-13 and 15-9. Zelin and Isolina
are both top-rated doubles players but are not regular partners.
