MALAYSIAN OPEN: GADE SCRAPES THROUGH IN OPENER
July 1, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - An off-form men's singles top-seed Peter Gade
Christensen of Denmark took three games to get past first round opponent
Polsana Boonsak of Thailand today at the four-star Malaysian Open being held
in Penang. Gade who had taken time off to rest after an unbeaten Thomas Cup
Finals campaign was a step slower than usual and had a difficult first two
games against Bonsak. He dropped the opener 13-15 and survived a late rush by
the Thai player in the second to win 15-13.
The young Dane played much more like a top seed in the decider and defeated
Boonsak 15-7.
Malaysian favorite Rashid Sidek won his first match, beating Canadian Bobby
Milroy easily 15-8 and 15-3.
The first day of competition was also marred by a spate of walkovers mostly
from United Kingdom players like Julia Mann, Helen Troke, Sandra Watt, Jillian
Haldane and Alexis Blanchflower.
