January 15, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Malaysia's men's singles players under the coaching of badminton great Morten Frost pulled off several more upsets today at the US 200,000 dollar Japan Open championships being played this week at the Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo as Roslin Hashim and Yong Hock Kin tripped up the third-seeded Sun Jun of China and the fourth-seeded Dane, Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen in third round action.

Roslin Hashim continued his upset streak in defeating Sun Jun 15-6 and 18-16. Hashim had beaten the seeded Fung Permadi of Taiwan on Wednesday and then had taken out 1993 world champion Joko Suprianto of Indonesia yesterday.

In the Hoyer-Yong matchup, the Malaysian got off to a good start in the first game, scoring the first five points against an off-form Hoyer. Hoyer was not able to catch up to Yong after that opening spurt and lost the first game 12-15. In the second frame, the Malaysian again got an opening lead and Hoyer was not able to sustain his form enough to overcome Yong's advantage. Yong took the second game 15-12.

Rashid Sidek, who stunned the second seeded Dong Jiong of China yesterday, took out another seed today. He beat Budi Santoso of Indonesia, a 9-to-16 pick, by a score of 12-15, 15-5 and 15-2.

9-to-16 pick Ong Ewe Hock, another of the Morten Frost-led Malaysians, beat middle seed Marleve Mainaky of Indonesia 18-15, 13-15 and 15-0.

Top seed Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark went through to the quarterfinals, defeating Rikard Magnusson of Sweden 15-6 and 15-6.

In women's singles, the third-seeded Mia Audina of Indonesia survived a tough match against Kaneko Yonekura of Japan to move into the quarterfinals. Audina had to overcome 0-7 and 0-4 deficits before she could post a 12-11 and 12-11 win against the Japanese player.

Top seed Ye Zhaoying of China and second seed Gong Zhichao also of China went through to the quarterfinals. Ye beat Judith Meulendijks of the Netherlands 11-7 and 11-2, while Gong defeated Takako Ida of Japan 11-6 and 11-5.

In men's doubles, world champions Chandra Wijaya and Budiarto Sigit, seeded first, gained a spot in the quarterfinals by beating Keita Masuda and Tadashi Ohtsuka of Japan 15-9 and 15-8. Second seeds Yoo Yung-Sung and Lee Dong-Soo also moved ahead with a 15-4, 9-15 and 15-2 victory over Thailand's Pramote Teerawiwatana and Siripong Siripool.
