October 2, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Seeded players from England, Australia and
Sweden had it tough yesterday on the opening day of competition at the German Open
badminton championships in Saarbrucken. England's Darren Hall, the eleventh
seed in men's singles, lost to Ismail Samad from Malaysia in a fiercely
contested first round match 14-18, 15-13 10-15. His compatriot, Joanne
Muggeridge, the sixth seed in the women's singles event, was defeated by
Germany's Anika Seitz in another first-round affair that went three games
6-11, 11-7 and 6-11.
Two seeded pairs from the land down under were also put out on the first day.
Men's doubles eighth seeds David Bamford and Peter Blackburn were eliminated
by Peder Nissen and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark in another fiercely fought
first round match 17-18, 15-10 and 13-18. Mixed doubles eighth seeds Murray
Hocking and Lisa Campbell were given the boot by England's Simon Archer and
Nicola Beck in a second round contest 4-15, 18-14, 7-15.
Sweden though suffered the biggest upset on opening day, Mixed doubles
fourth seeds Peter Axelsson and Catrine Bengtsson were soundly thrashed by
Janek Roos and Helene Kirkegaard of Denmark 15-4 and 15-7 in a second round
matchup.
In what may be considered another upset, Russian Open mixed doubles champions
Jon Holst-Christensen and Ann Jorgensen of Denmark were defeated by the pair
of Michael Keck from Germany and Erica van den Heuvel of the Netherlands in a
sensational and well-played match 15-12 and 15-12. Holst and Jorgensen, though
unseeded, were favoured in the second round contest with the fifth-seeded
German-Dutch combination.
