KONICA CUP (SINGAPORE OPEN): BAMBANG AND RISEU DUMP TOP SEEDS

July 24, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Bambang Suprianto, one of Indonesia's top men's doubles specialist, continued his successful transition to the mixed doubles event today in the quarterfinals of the Konica Cup-SIngapore Open at the National Indoor Stadium. Suprianto and partner Rosalina Riseu upset the top-seeded pair of Lee Dong Soo and Yim Kyung Jin 18-14 and 15-7 to gain a spot in tomorrow's semifinals.

Olympic champion Kim Dong Moon of Korea also gained a semifinal berth. Kim, who is partnering Park So Yun on a trial basis on this part of the badminton Grand Prix circuit, upended the second-seeds Chris Hunt and Donna Kellogg of England 15-9 and 15-6 in his quarterfinal matchup.

Bambang and Riseu, seeded seventh after their runner-up finish at the Indonesian Open, will face the unseeded but dangerous Koreans Yoo Yung Sung and Chung Jae Hee in one semifinal. Kim and Park, the eighth picks, meet unseeded Indonesians Agung and Anastasia.

In men's singles, top-seed Sun Jun of China had another troubled match. Sun was beaten by Indonesia's Rosobin Jeffer 14-17 in the first game before he was able to turn back Jeffer in the second and third 15-3 and 15-4.

After Jeffer had squeezed by Sun in the first game tiebreak, his play turned sour and erratic as he seemed to be rushing his strokes while Sun played with experienced pace and control, taking advantage of Jeffer's errors to take the victory and the quarterfinal berth.

In men's doubles, the temporary Malaysian partnership of Olympic and world championships silver medalist Cheah Soon Kit and Chew Choon Eng again failed to get far, losing to Indonesians Eng Hian and Hermono 15-13, 12-15 and 4-15. Cheah is playing with Chew while his co-silver medalist Yap Kim Hock is recovering from shoulder surgery.
