May 3, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Canada's badminton wonder woman, Denyse
Julien, today continued to rule Canadian women's badminton by taking three
titles at the Canadian national championships. Julien won the women's singles,
women's doubles and mixed doubles events at the tournament that finished today
at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton, Alberta.
Julien, who has dominated Canadian women's badminton for more than a decade,
defeated the up-and-coming Alberta junior player Jody Patrick 11-3 and 11-4
in today's women's singles championship match to retain her title.
Julien also combined with Robbyn Hermitage of Quebec to take the women's
doubles crown. Julien and Hermitage beat the Ong twins from British Columbia,
Elma and Moira, very decisively in the finals 15-3 and 15-6.
In the mixed doubles event finals, Julien and Iain Sydie of Alberta defeated
Brian Moody and Robbyn Hermitage of Quebec 15-10 and 15-10.
Sydie, last year's men's doubles champion with Anil Kaul, was a repeat
winner. Sydie this year teamed up with Brent Olynyk of British Columbia and
the duo had an easy finals win over Mike Beres of Ontario and Brian Moody of
Quebec 15-7 and 15-7.
In the men's singles event, former Chinese junior champion Wen Wang who now
coaches in Edmonton turned back Sydie's bid to retain his 1996 men's singles
title. Wen defeated Sydie in today's championship match 15-11 and 15-4. The
title is the third for Wen.
