ASIAN JUNIORS: CHINA VERSUS MALAYSIA IN DOUBLES FINALS

April 12, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - It will be China versus Malaysia in all
three doubles championship matches tomorrow at the Asian Junior badminton
championships in Manila, Philippines as new Malaysian national coach Morten
Frost's junior charges surprised him and their opponents in the female and
mixed doubles events.
Chor Hooi Yee and Lim Pek Siah upset China's Yu Hua and Zhou Mi in one of
tonight's female doubles semifinals 15-10 and 15-6. Chinese top-seeds Yang
Wei and Gao Ling won the other semifinal, defeating Vita Marisa and Enni
Widowati of Indonesia 15-10 and 15-12.
In mixed doubles semifinal action, Malaysia's Chan Chong Ming and Lim Pek
Siah defeated the Indonesian pairing of Denni (no last name reported - Editor)
and Rossi Riani 15-11 and 15-2, while top-seeds Cheng Rui and Gao Ling of
China eliminated their teammates, Jiang Shan and Gong Ruina, 15-6 and 15-5 to
set up another China-versus-Malaysia final.
As expected, Malaysia's world male doubles junior champions, Jeremy Gan and
Chan Chong Ming, stayed on course for the Asian title in their event, beating
Luluk Hadianto and Mohamed Noor Misuari of Indonesia 15-11 and 15-6 in the
semifinals.
In the other male doubles semifinals, Zhang Yi and Cai Yun of China upset
their compatriots Xia Xuanze and Chen Hong 15-6 and 15-6. Xia and Chen were
the second-seeds behind Gan and Chan of Malaysia.
