March 12, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - At the All-England Open badminton tournament in Birmingham, three more men's singles seeds fell in late first round action that ended in the wee hours of this morning.

1992 Olympic gold medalist Alan Budi Kusuma of Indonesia was defeated by Pullela Gopi Chand, the Indian national champion and a finalist at last month's Indian Open. Gopi Chand, a protege of former All-England champion Prakash Padukone, was soundly thrashed by the 9/16th seeded Kusuma in the first game 2-15, but was able to come back strong to outlast the fading Indonesian player in the second and third games 15-10 and 15-13.

The 1995 world championships silver medalist, Park Sung-woo of Korea, was also eliminated. He was defeated by the tall Thomas Johansson of Sweden 15-6 and 15-11. Like Kusuma, Park was seeded 9/16.

Another 9/16 seed, Jeffer Rosobin of Indonesia, was also shown to the exit door. Korean Hwang Sun Ho dispatched Rosobin 15-6, 1-15 and 18-16.

Two mixed doubles seeds also were eliminated in first round action.

3/4 seeds Thomas Stavngaard and Ann Jorgensen of Denmark were beaten by Chris Hunt and Donna Kellogg of England. The English combination of the veteran Hunt and the rookie Kellogg disposed of the Danes 15-11 and 15-11.

5/8 seeds Jonas Rasmussen and Ann-Lou Jorgensen, also from Denmark, lost to Zhang Wei and Liu Lu of China 15-10 and 15-7.
