FUNG AND HOYER THRU TO SEMIS IN TAIPEI

January 10, 1997 (New Shuttlenws) - Men's singles top-seeds Fung Permadi of Taipei and Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark won their quarterfinal matches today at the Chinese Taipei Open badminton tournament.

Permadi had to withstand tough opposition from Malaysian Yong Hock Kin before ensuring his place in the semis. Permadi lost the first game to Yong 16-18 but won the next two games 15-12 and 15-10.

The top-seeded Permadi will face the up-and-coming Danish youngster Peter Gade-Christensen in the semifinals. Gade defeated Jeroen van Dijk of the Netherlands 15-4 and 15-9 in his section of the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Hoyer-Larsen easily disposed of the Indonesian player Salim in the first game of his quarterfinal 15-4 but had a struggle against the determined play of the Indonesian in the second. Hoyer did pull out a win in the second 15-13 to clinch a semifinal berth.

Hoyer will play Hermawan Susanto of Indonesia. Susanto defeated compatriot Marleve Mainaky in the quarterfinals.

In men's doubles quarterfinal play, top-seeds Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia steamrollered Lee Dong Soo and Hwang Sun Ho of Korea 15-0 and 15-3, while second-seeds Antonius and Denny Kantono beat Malaysians Rosman Razak and Chew Choon Eng 15-10 and 15-0.

3-4 seeds Sigit and Chandra Wijaya (Indonesia) came back after losing a thrilling first game to beat Malaysians Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook 17-18, 15-5 and 15-4. The other 3-4 seeds Ha Tae Kwon and Kang Kyung Jin (Korea) also won their quarterfinal match.

Subagja and Mainaky will face Sigit and Wijaya in one semifinal. Antonius and Kantono are matched against Ha and Kang in the other.

In women's singles, top-seed Mia Audina of Indonesia beat Lotte Thomsen of Denmark 11-1 and 11-2 in a quarterfinal match. Audina will play Thailander Pornsawan Plungwech in the semifinals.
