IT'S A DUTCH TREAT IN WALES

December 2, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Players from the Netherlands treated themselves to three championships at the Welsh International badminton tournament that ended yesterday in Cardiff.

In the men's singles final , the top-seeded Chris Bruil beat compatriot Gerben Bruijstens 15-12 and 15-5. In the women's doubles championship match, Nicole van Hooren and Brenda Conijn came back after losing the first game to defeat the English-Wales pair of Sara Hardaker and Kelly Morgan 4-15, 15-9 and 15-4.

Van Hooren also went home with a second title, the third for the Dutch, when she and Quinten van Dalm beat Ian Pearson and Joanne Wright of England 18-14 and 15-4 in the mixed doubles final.

In women's singles, Kelly Morgan entered the record books as the first Welsh player to ever win the Welsh International title in that event. Morgan beat Karolina Ericsson of Sweden 11-4 and 11-4 in the event final.

Ian Pearson and James Anderson of England won the men's doubles title when they defeated Rasmus Wengberg and Frederik Bergstrom of Sweden 18-16 and 15-9 in the championship match.

The Welsh International is part of a second-tier international badminton tournament circuit organized by the European Badminton Union (The top-tier international badminton tournament circuit is the Grand Prix series run by the International Badminton Federation).
