SUPRIANTO TAKES MEN'S SINGLES TOP SPOT IN GRAND PRIX RANKINGS by Mike Grossman October 1, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - With his victory in the men's singles finals over Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark at the U.S. Open on Saturday, Joko Suprianto of Indonesia not only took home the championship but also grabbed the top position in the Grand Prix rankings in men's singles from the Danish player. Susi Susanti of Indonesia remains in first place in women's singles. U.S. Open winner Mia Audina, also of Indonesia, moves up from the 24th spot to number 8. Indonesians Denny Kantono and Antonius lead the men's doubles Grand Prix rankings followed by Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia. In the women's doubles rankings, Helene Kirkegaard and Rikke Olsen are the top pair. The U.S. Open champions, Eliza and Rosiana Zelin of Indonesia, have taken over second place. Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min of Korea lead the mixed doubles rankings followed by Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen. The new Korean pairing of Kim Dong Mun and Chung So Young have landed the tenth spot with their victory at the U.S. Open. The Grand Prix rankings are used to determine which players qualify for a spot in the Grand Prix Finals to be held in early December in Bali, Indonesia. The GP Finals offer the most prize money of any badminton tournament and is open only to the top players in the Grand Prix circuit.
