SEOUL: Ong Ewe Hock took the cue from his Nusa Mahsuri teammate,
Rashid Sidek, when he won his opening Group D match at the Ciba Asia
Cup last night.
The world number 18 picked an emphatic 15-7, 15-6 win over South
Korean Hwang Sun-ho to put himself in contention for a place in the
last four.
Ewe Hock takes on Taiwan's Fung Permadi in a match that will decide
the semi-finalist from the group. Fung had defeated Sun-ho in his
opening match on Wednesday.
Rashid's chances of making the semi-finals received a boost last night
although the 28-year-old shuttler did not see action.
Indonesian Jeffer Rossobin, who lost in straight games to Rashid in
the opening match, defeated reigning world junior champion Chen Gang
of China 15-7, 9-15, 15-12 last night.
With the surprise result, Rashid needs to take only one game off Chen
Gang in his Group B match tonight to make the semi-finals.
Rashid, who won the title in 1991, is looking for a good run in the
Asia Cup to redeem himself after the Thomas Cup disappointment.
China's Xie Yangchun is the first player to book his place in the last
four.
Yangchun, who upset top seed Park Sung-woo of South Korea in his
opening match, followed it up with a 15-9, 9-15, 15-12 win over
Indonesia's Hendrawan last night.
In the men's doubles competition, the challenge from Soo Beng
Kiang-Tan Kim Her came to an early end.
The Wira Tangkis duo crashed to their second consecutive defeat when
they were beaten 15-7, 6-15, 8-15 by Indonesia's Tony Gunawan-Rudy
Wijaya.
Beng Kiang-Kim Her had lost to South Korea's Yoo Yong-sung-Kim
Dong-moon in their opening match.
