CBC BADMINTON ON TV

Attention

The CBC has committed to broadcasting at least 30 minutes of the Canadian International Badminton Tournament to be held from Tuesday February 22 to the finals on Sunday February 27, 2000. This is a full point qualifying tournament for the Olympic seeding - meaning that we expect some of the best players in the world to attend.

A part of the arrangement for televising this tournament is that it is being held in the Atrium (unlimited ceiling height!) of the CBC's new building at 250 Front Street West (2 blocks east of Spadina). Its going to be quite a nice venue, two courts and spectator seating surrounded by curtains, and with possible overflow viewing from the balconies above.

There are two things, as Toronto & District Badminton supporters, that we need to do to make this a spectacular event for Badminton.

1. Fill the seats and more, with enthusiastic spectators. Most importantly, fill all the semi's on Saturday the 26th and especially, the finals on Sunday the 27th. We want to make sure that the televised events themselves show lots of people watching, and we want the CBC to see that people want to watch Badminton. A crowd of several hundred down at their building is the single most effective way we can convince the CBC that they should televise Olympic badminton. Frankly, I would measure success as having too many people on hand to watch!

2. We could use volunteers for the jobs listed below. The involvement of a wider group than some of the regular volunteers will up our level of enthusiasm - and that is infectious. It would also provide a wee bit of training should Toronto ever succeed in hosting the Olympics. To allow all this to happen, I'm going to publicize this on the web, mail it to each club, and phone volunteers to organize volunteers. The volunteers can then phone, fax or email Sandy (the receptionist at my office) to sign up for time slots and tasks (so even if I'm out things keep moving). Finally, watch the T&D web site for more precise tournament details - like game times. We won't know these until after the final draw is made.
