Jorge Palazuelos
Born in Mexico City on February 28th 1949.He was the
Junior Champion (under 16) in 1966 and awarded OUTSTANDING JUNIOR
BADMINTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR , by the USA. Badminton Players Association
(American Badminton Association, later to become USBA and then even later USAB.
ed.). That same
year he was proclaimed the National Singles and Doubles player in the under
21 category. 8 times National Champion in men's doubles. By 1969 he had
participated in the US. Open where he got to quarter finals. Men's Doubles
champion and runner up in mixed doubles in the Houston Badminton Open
Championship in 1970. Between 1966 and 1983 he competed in over 40
competitions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in the United States and
Canada , as member of the Mexican Thomas Cup Team( Thomas Cup1970-1973 and
1976-1979). He was the first Mexican player to play in the All England
Badminton Championships in England, in doubles in 1972.In 1972 he won the
Mexican Open Championship beating the Swedish brothers Sture and Kurt
Johnsson( at that time, current Swedish champions ) in the finals with his
then partner Francisco Saņudo. In 1974 after competing in the European
circuit (Danish, Germany,all England and Swiss) he won the Swiss Open in
Men's Doubles with partner Ricardo Jaramillo.In 1976 he toured China with
the Mexican Badminton team, playing for 5 weeks in various cities with the
powerful Team of Red China.In those days China still did not participate in
any international official competition. In 1977 he participated in the first
World Championship in Malmo, Sweden in Singles and Doubles.In 1980 he
participated in both singles and doubles, in the Second World Badminton
Championship held in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1989 he won the U.S, Masters in
mixed doubles in Manhattan Beach California. He is currently Mexico's
National Men's Doubles Champion in Masters with Ricardo Jaramillo.
On 6 December 2001 Jorge was named to Mexico's Sport Confederation's Hall of
Fame for his many years of playing and winning in various tournaments during
1966-1982 and currently Mexico's Master champion in doubles with
Ricardo Jaramillo.
