Recently I initiated a discussion here about how to resolve a three-way tie in a round robin event. There were many good responses, but there was not total agreement. Since then, I made an inquiry of the United States Badminton Association. Below is the reply. Paul Malischke, University of Wisconsin Badminton Club, USA >From Paisan Rangsikitpho, USBA Court Officials Chair June, 1995 This is from the IBF rules and adopted by the USBA. Round Robin - Procedure to solve a tie The procedure to solve a round robin tie is as follows: 1. Ranking will be established by the number of matches won. 2. If two players / pairs have won the same number of matches, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. 3. If three or more players / pairs have won the same number of matches, ranking will be established by the difference between total games won and total games lost. *** If this still leaves two players / pairs equal, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. 4. If three or more players / pairs have won the same number of matches and are equal in the difference between total games won and total games lost, ranking will be established by the difference between total points won and total points lost. 5. If this still leaves two players / pairs equal, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. 6. If three or more players / pairs are still equal, then ranking will be established by drawing lots.
