CURRENT EVENTS - notes taken from various sources and arranged in revers chronological order 6 FEB 1995 (from alt.sports.badminton) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mpecmc@solar.cc.nus.sg (mc_hammer) Newsgroups: alt.sports.badminton,soc.culture.malaysia Subject: How Malaysia fared in January's tournaments Date: 6 Feb 1995 04:21:58 GMT There are three tournaments in January: the Taiwan, Korean and Japan open. The best results achieved by Malaysia is that the Yap Twins won the runners-up of the Taiwan Open. Cheah Soon Kit & Tan Kim Hock also reached the semi-finals of Japan Open. The results show that Malaysia is still able to compete in men's doubles. However they still lost to the more superb indonesian pairs. The Yap Twins, which is considered the third doubles pair in malaysia lost to the third doubles of indonesian in the Taiwan Open final. The new combination of Soo Beng Kiang & Yap Kim Her lost to Rexy & Ricky both in Korean and Japan Open. Cheah Soon Kit & Tan Kim Hock lost to Bambang & Gunawan in both Korean and Japan Opens. As for single, Rashid lost to Arbi in Japan Open. Foo Kok Keong lost to Fung Permadi in Japan Open. Yong Hock Kin who get walkover from a seeded player, marched into the last 16 in the Japan Open but lost to an unknown Dutch player and failed to reach last 8. Looks like Rashid still can't beat Arbi and Foo Kok Keong is too old for the competitive badminton already. As for the youngsters, the most prospective player Yong Hock Kin failed to show that he can be the successor of the older generation. The indonesians still show supremacy in the badminton world.
