Fong) September 16, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - At the Royal Brunei/Helix Open that was completed last weekend (September 11), 1996 men's doubles Olympic silver medalist Cheah Soon Kit of Malaysia failed to make it past the round of 16. Cheah was playing in the tournament with Prince Pengiran Muda Haj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the son of the Sultan of Brunei who is himself a badminton player and a great badminton enthusiast. Yap Kim Hock who normally plays with Cheah was not entered in the competition. Rudy Gunawan of Indonesia, the 1992 Olympic men's silver medalist in men's doubles, also failed to make it past the round of 16. He was paired with Prince Pengiran Muda Abdul Qawi, a nephew of the Sultan of Brunei. Bambang Suprianto who has been partnering Gunawan in many previous successes was not entered in the competition.
