SEPTEMBER WORLD RANKINGS by Mike Grossman (from a report filed by YY-Noram Sportsware and material from D.Shuttlenws files) September 3, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - In the badminton world rankings released earlier today by the International Badminton Federation, Joko Suprianto of Indonesia has taken over the top spot in men's singles from Dong Jiong of China. Suprianto's victory in the Sony Indonesian Open this past weekend coupled with Dong Jiong's inactivity helped put the Indonesian into the top spot. Susi Susanti, also of Indonesia, has taken over first place in the women's singles with the help of her Indonesian Open title. Bang, the Olympic gold medalist from Korea, is in the second spot. (Editor's Note - According to D.Shuttlenws files, these badminton world rankings are different from the Grand Prix rankings which were also released and published by New Shuttlenws today. These rankings take into account results from all tournaments recognized by the International Badminton Federation and are calculated on a rolling 12-month basis. The world rankings are used primarily for qualifying for the Olympic Games and possibly for the world championships. These are also used for seeding in some tournaments. Grand Prix rankings take into account only those competitions that are part of the badminton Grand Prix circuit and are calculated on a calendar year basis. The Grand Prix rankings are used to determine which players get to participate in the Grand Prix Finals in December). Men's Singles (Top 50) 1. Joko Suprianto - Indonesia 307.03 points 2.
