INDONESIA AND CHINA WHITEWASH UBER CUP OPPOSITION (Corrected text of previous report) May 16, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - Indonesia and China both started their quest for the Uber Cup with one-sided victories over their opening day opponents at the world women's team championships in Hong Kong today. Indonesia opened its defense of the Uber Cup, symbolic of the world women's team championship, with a 5-0 whitewash of the Japanese side, while China, a top contender for the Cup, blanked the Russian women's team. Susi Susanti started the Indonesian steamroller with a quick 11-3 11-5 victory over Hisako Mizui. Lili Tampi and Finarsih followed Susanti's win with a more difficult victory over Tomomi Matsuo and Masako Sakamoto. The Japanese ladies fought hard to equalize the score with the Indonesians, specially in the second game but failed as Tampi and Finarsih eked out a 15-7 15-13 decision. Mia Audina then clinched things for the Indonesians, defeating Yasuko Mizui 11-6 11-2. Eliza and Denyana Lomban beat the Miyamura sisters, Aiko and Akiko, 15-5 15-10 and Meiluawati defeated Takako Ida 2-11 11-4 11-0 to complete the Indonesian victory. World number one Ye Zhaoying kicked off China's 1996 Uber Cup quest with an easy 11-1 11-2 win over an overmatched Elena Rybkhina. Han Jingna and Marina Yakusheva met in the second match of the China-Russia tie. Han was sluggish throughout the match with the Russian lady, but she managed to pull out an 11-7 11-4 victory to put China ahead 2-0. Qin Yiyuan and Tang Yongshu then beat Nadezda Chervakova and Ella Karachkova 15-6 15-8 to ensure a Chinese victory in the tie. Wang Chen beat Elena Suchareva 11-4 11-8 and the doubles team of Ge Fei and Gu Jun walloped Elena Rybkhina and Marina Yakusheva 15-1 15-2 to finish off the Russians. Indonesia's win over Japan impressed Chinese head coach Li Yongbo. "Watching the way Indonesia played it is obvious they have prepared well. Their number one doubles pair is stronger than their ranking suggests (and) they will be hard to beat," Li said in a post-tie interview. Li also said "Our play was just average. We need time to get used to the court and the (playing) conditions. Ye played well but our other singles players struggled a little before winning."
