INJURIES PLAGUE INDONESIAN THOMAS CUPPERS April 29, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - The injury bug continues to hamper the Indonesian Thomas Cup team as they prepare to defend their world men's team championship in late May. The latest to go down to injury is Ardy Wiranata, one of the heroes of the 1994 Indonesian championship team. Wiranata suffered an ankle injury in a training session last week and has been told to take a rest. Wiranata, a singles specialist, has been the bright star during the Indonesian preparations for the Thomas Cup and has been defeating his sparring partners regularly, including the world's top-ranked player Joko Suprianto. Other Indonesian players who have not been able to attend all the training sessions due to illness or injury include Allan Budi Kusuma, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, and Heryanto Arbi, the current world men's singles champion. Kusuma was downed by high fever in early April and is only now getting into matchplaying form. Also in early April, Arbi suffered a groin injury as well as was ill with a fever. He is still not performing at full strength. COPYRIGHT 1996 by D.Shuttlenws@genie.com. PERMISSION GIVEN to redistribute electronically in whole or in part.
