UPSETS AND NEAR-UPSETS AT EURO CHAMPIONSHIPS April 18, 1996 (D.Shuttlenws) - In an unconfirmed report from the European badminton championships in Herning, Denmark, Katarzyna Krasowska of Poland is said to have scored the biggest win of her badminton career earlier today when she reportedly defeated second- seeded Catrine Bengtsson of Sweden in a third-round women's singles match. Bengtsson was said to be visibly off-form and fatigued, scoring only 2 points in the first game and then a humiliating zero in the second. Krasowska's reported victory would put her into the women's singles quarterfinals of the European championships. Another women's singles seed also lost today. Joanne Muggeridge of England, seeded 5/8, was defeated by Mette Pedersen of Denmark 11-8 11-6. In men's singles play, 5/8 seed Martin Lundgard Hansen was upset by relative unknown Daniel Eriksson of Sweden. The first game was nip and tuck all the way with the Swede winning by the smallest possible margin at 18-17. In the second, Hansen had nothing left and Eriksson rolled on to a quarterfinals berth, winning 15-6. 3/4 seed Jeroen van Dijk of the Netherlands had to battle against Marek Bujak of Germany after losing the first game 15-18. Van Dijk took the next two games 15-5 15-11 to prevent an upset. Another men's singles 5/8 seed, Darren Hall of England had his second tough match in a row as he needed three games to subdue a tenacious Chris Bruil of the Netherlands 9-15 17-14 15-8. In yesterday's play, Hall was extended by Erik Lia of Norway and also needed three games to claim victory 11-15 15-6 15-5.
