FLASH - COMPLETE OLYMPIC QUALIFYING LIST RELEASED April 3, 1996 - D.Shuttlenws - The International Badminton Federation today released the names of badminton players who had qualified to have their names submitted to each player's respective National Olympic Committee for approval to participate in the Atlanta Olympic Games this July. The players were selected on the basis of their performances at badminton federation recognized tournaments from April 1, 1995 to March 31, 1996. The top ranked players were selected with each country limited to 2 players in each event - 3 players if all three were in the top 16 . Additionally, each of the five badminton continental associa- tions were entitled to at least 1 player in each event. Also, the United States is entitled to at least 2 entries overall as the host country. Kevin Han qualified in men's singles as the top-ranked player in the event from the PanAmerican continent while Linda French and Erika von Heiland, the highest-ranked players from the U.S.A., were nominated in women's doubles to take the other host country berth. The players on the list must next obtain the approval of their National Olympic Committees. These bodies have the final say on whether or not a qualified player may participate in the Olympic Games and some of those named on the qualifying list may not be permitted to compete if they have not met their country's criteria.
