Singapore Open: Rasmussen Tires Out

August 25, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - 1997 world badminton men's singles champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark continues to fall short of the lofty perch he once occupied on top of the badminton world. Rasmussen today was upended in second round action at the Konica Cup Singapore Open championships by Indonesia's Marleve Mainaky 12-15 and 9-15.

Rasmussen, seeded at number four, had a promising start earlier today when he quickly disposed of Korean Lee Hyun Il in a first round match 15-0 and 15-4. However, he faced an opponent of a different caliber in Marleve Mainaky this evening.

The two contested the opening set very closely but the Danish player seemed to tire late in the set. Mainaky was then able to pull away and post a 15-12 win. In the second, Mainaky was in control despite several scoring surges by Rasmussen and went on to win 15-9.

Men's singles top-seed Peter Gade of Denmark went through to the third round after getting a walkover in his first match and then romping over Ramesh Nathan of Malaysia 15-3 and 15-5 this evening.

Second seed Fung Permadi of Taiwan also went through to the third stage. He defeated Daniel Eriksson of Sweden 15-5 and 15-2 in the first round and then put out Chen Wei of China 15-8 and 15-5 this evening.

In the highlight match of the evening, sixth seed Hendrawan of Indonesia survived a stiff challenge from Malaysia's Ismail Saman. Hendrawan was taken to a tiebreak in the third set before he was able to pull out a 15-11, 11-15 and 17-15 victory.
