SEA Games: Indonesia's Halim Fails Twice

August 12, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Haryanto Halim, one of Indonesia's bri= ght hopes in badminton, fell out of the medal hunt in two individual events toda= y at the 20th South East Asian Games in Brunei. Halim and men's doubles partne= r Wahyu (Agung) Setiawan were beaten in the men's doubles quarterfinals by Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook of Malaysia 10-15 and 13-15, while in the mixed doubles elite eight, Halim and Indarti Isoliana were defeated by Rosman Raza= k and Norashikin Amin of Malaysia 13-15 and 10-15.

Indonesia's other medal prospects went thru to the semifinals and assured themselves of at least a bronze medal. Taufik Hidayat had an easy outing in the men's singles competition. He trounced Arman Kambar of Brunei 15-2 and 15-3. Cindana Hartono Kusuma had a similiarly easy day in the women's single= s event. She whipped Kennie Asuncion of the Philippines 11-1 and 11-0.

In the men's doubles event, top-seeds Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian beat Ia= n Gil Piencenaves and Melvin Llanes of the Philippines 15-4 and 15-9, while in the women's doubles competition, Etty Tantri and Chynthia Tuwankotta smashed Ngo Thi Hai Van and Nguyen Hanh Dung of Vietnam 15-3 and 15-2. Wahyu Setiawa= n and Emma Ermawati put out Vietnam's Duc Sang and Le Thi Kim Anh of Vietnam i= n the mixed doubles event, 15-6 and 15-8.

Malaysia's Wong Choon Hann, the top seed in men's singles, beat Piencenav= es of the Philippines, 15-8 and 15-5, to keep pace with Hidayat in the race for a gold medal. Wong will face Indonesian Ronny Agustinus in one of tomorrow's semifinal matches, while Hidayat will do battle with Malaysia's Roslin Hashi= m.
