SEA Games: Malaysians Roll Into Badminton Team Semis

August 8, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Powerhouse Malaysia crushed the Philipp= ines 5 matches to none today in the preliminary round of the badminton men's team competition at the 20th South East Asian Games now underway in Brunei to mov= e into the semifinals and a probable title showdown with top-seeds Indonesia. Joining the Malaysians in the men's team semifinals are the Indonesians who had a bye in the preliminary round of the 7-nation contest, the Thais who whitewashed Vietnam today, and the Singaporeans who notched a 3-1 victory ov= er host country Brunei.

Rashid Sidek led off for the Malaysians today with a 15-5 and 15-1 whippi= ng of Melvin Llanes. Mohd. Roslin Hashim then beat Ian Gil Piencenaves 15-4 and 15-2, and Jason Wong scored the clincher with his 15-5 and 15-9 defeat of Amahit Arolas Junior.

Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah defeated Llanes and Piencenaves 15-5 and = 15-4 in the first doubles. Wong Choon Hann and Chew Choon Eng then mopped up for the Malaysians with their 15-3 and 15-4 drubbing of Jaime Llanes and Arolas.=

Indonesia will face Singapore in one of tomorrow's semifinals, and Malays= ia will do battle with Thailand.

In the women's team competition, there are only four nations entered. The top-seeded Indonesians will meet Vietnam, and Thailand will play Malaysia in semifinal action tomorrow.

Thailand wins 5-0 (B. Polsana beat Ahn Hoang 15-5, 15-3; Anup. Teeraratsakul beat Van Loi 15-2, 15-6; P. Sudket beat Nguyen Phu Cong 15-13, 15-6; P. Teerawiwatana and T. Panvisvas beat Ahn Hoang and Van Loi 15-3, 15-7; K. Sudhisodhi and K. Kitikul beat Nguyen Phu Cong and Duc Sang 15-2, 15-4)

Singapore versus Brunei
Singapore wins 3-1 (P. Kim Pong Lau beat Mohammad 15-6, 15-3; Kendric Yen Hu= i lost to Arman Kambar 15-13, 10-15, 9-15; Noor Izwan beat Ak Noor Rumaizi 15-= 8, 15-2; Jack Hee Lik Kai and Yeow Nam beat Mohd. Fahdli and Zailani Yuin 15-7, 17-14; P. Kim Pong Lau and Noor Izwan versus Ermadena and Michael - results not available)
