ENGLAND: AMAZING HALL GETS NUMBER TEN

** This NEW SHUTTLENWS report is presented by YANG YANG Badminton Products and their Western USA agents BADMINTON ALLEY. **

February 9, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Darren Hall, England's 34-year old men's singles ace, battled back from a 6-15 first game setback to win the final of the English national championships held at Haywards Heath this past weekend and claim an amazing tenth English men's singles crown. Hall beat Colin Haughton, the current English number two, in Sunday's championship match 6-15, 15-7 and 15-5.

To get number ten, Hall also had to struggle on Saturday in his semifinal match against the unseeded Richard Doling. After eking out a first game win at 15-11 and then dropping the second 9-15, Hall found himself in a fight to survive in the decider. Doling got a nose ahead at 10-9 and seemed capable of putting out the veteran. But with 13 years of experience in the finals of the English national championships and as many years in international competition, the heady and steady Hall strung together 6 points to turn the tables on Doling and gain the final with a 15-10 third set victory.

In the women's singles final, Julia Mann easily beat Tracey Hallam 11-2 and 11-2 to capture her third straight national title. Mann had an untroubled march to her championship victory. She did not drop a single set in the tournament and allowed her four opponents a total of only 19 points over 8 sets.

World-beaters Simon Archer and Chris Hunt won the men's doubles championship. They defeated Julian Robertson and Nathan Robertson 17-15 and 15-12 in the final.

In the women's doubles final, comebacking veteran Sarah Sankey and partner Ella Miles upended the top English pair of Joanne Goode and Donna Kellogg 15-11, 7-15 and 15-10.
